CDFW Southern summary (updated 1 Sep 2026): open year-round, all depths, five fish, no minimum size. They come up on shrimp flies and squid strips on the same drops as vermilion and whitefish. A descending device is still required on the boat when you are in the groundfish game.
California scorpionfish (Scorpaena guttata), called sculpin by local anglers, are mottled red, brown and orange fish with large heads, fleshy flaps and many dark spots. The dorsal, anal and pelvic spines are venomous and can cause very painful wounds.
Scorpionfish live on rocky reefs, around artificial reefs, breakwaters, pier pilings, and in harbor rocks. Boats out of San Pedro and Long Beach target them on reefs in Santa Monica Bay and off Palos Verdes; pier anglers in LA and Long Beach harbors catch them too.
